As you already know, I am pregnant with our first child. And we are expecting a baby boy. =)

I am 22 weeks 4 days pregnant in this photo and as you can see,
my belly is not very huge yet. I am in my second trimester and
I feel the same as before -- no vomitting at all, good appetite and
happy mood almost everyday. I can feel our baby kicking me
just as I type this entry. hahahaha =)))

My exact thoughts now: "HOLY SH*T! There's really someone in there!
Aloha baby... mummy and daddy loves you!"

To be honest, there are many adjustments I have to make ever since I got pregnant, and there are many times I resented this whole state of pregnancy. I resent feeling so FAT and bloated all over; having LUMPS OF FAT for arms is not making things better, plus my boobs are like 2 HUGE watermelons - heavy and uncomfortable, and to top it off, I am plagued by comedones due to hormonal changes -- which I keep under control with TCS CLINIC's Signature 3D Cell Treatment Deep Pore Cleansing Facial, I do not know what to do without them!

While being pregnant is sure to be one of the most magical times of one's life, there is no denying the discomfort one will face from time to time. And as I ease into the second trimester, I have been starting to feel achy all over. I started reading up on prenatal massages and as you probably already know that therapeutic massage has been used for centuries to improve overall health, reduce stress, and relieve muscle tension when one is not pregnant. What about when one is pregnant? Is it safe to get a prenatal massage? When is it recommended that you get one? How often should you get massaged while pregnant? What benefits will you see? These are some of the questions that I had in mind while researching about prenatal massage.

And I will share with you my findings!!!

What is prenatal massage?

Prenatal massage shares many of the goals of regular massage – to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and just make you feel good. But it's also tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women and their changing bodies, and therapists who are trained in prenatal massage adjust their techniques accordingly.

Is it safe to get a prenatal massage?

Prenatal massage is perfectly safe for both mother and child WHEN done by a trained professional therapist who specialises in prenatal massages. And the therapists at RN Spa are all trained professionals.

When is it recommended that you get one?

You should only go for a prenantal massage after your 1st trimester ( after 20 weeks is best) as by then your pregnancy has already stablised.

How often should you get massaged while pregnant?

It is recommended that one goes for a prenantal massage bi-weekly or weekly if you can afford it as consistency would generate positive results!

What are the benefits will you see after a good prenatal massage?

Prenatal massage is known to be able to reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches, help people who suffer from lower back pain, help those with chronic headaches, provide relief for joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health.

Prenatal massage may also decrease stress and promote relaxation which in turn helps you cope with discomfort especially when you are feeling crappy. Prenatal massage also aims to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation through mild pressure applied correctly.

Carrying a baby inside you changes your center of gravity and puts a lot of stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, so that your pelvic joints are less stable, and changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward. Add to that the extra weight you're carrying and you may find you've got an aching lower back.

Prenatal massage also addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy. Hormone levels are associated with relaxation and stress levels. When one is relaxed and less stress, this leads improved cardiovascular health and a calmer baby. In women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol (“stress hormones”) were reduced and dopamine and serotonin levels were increased (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression). These changes in hormone levels also led to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications, such as low birth weight. The evidence points strongly to maternal and newborn health benefits when massage is incorporated into your regular prenatal care. Plus, your hubbies will truly benefit from your prenatal massage. A calmer wife equals to a better life! *wink*

Edema, or swelling of the joints during pregnancy, is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels by the heavy uterus. A good prenantal massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in swollen joints, which also improves the removal of tissue waste, carried by the body’s lymph system.

Sciatic nerve pain is experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. The pressure of the uterus spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves. Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles. Many women have experienced significant reduction in sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy through regular massage.

At RN Spa, the therapists are all well trained in prenatal massage and they know exactly where my sore spots are and under the therapist's soothing touch, she provided me with much needed relief. Because she is so well trained, she also knows which areas and techniques to avoid. At the same time, it is important to communicate with your therapist at RN Spa and tell her where you need special attention and she will gladly oblige. Let your therapist at RN Spa know right away if you feel any discomfort during the massage so that she knows how to cater to your needs.

Here is a summary of potential benefits of a prenatal massage done at RN Spa:

❤ Reduced back pain
❤ Reduced joint pain
❤ Improved circulation
❤ Reduced edema
❤ Reduced muscle tension and headaches
❤ Reduced stress and anxiety
❤ Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
❤ Better sleep
❤ Faster postpartum recovery
❤ Shorter & less painful labour
❤ Nurturing touch which provides comfort during this stressful time of being so bloated

With so much benefits, it is highly recommended for all pregnant mummies to go for a prenatal massage after their first trimester to help them cope with the pregnancy.

By the way, pregnant mummies, please remember to steer clear of hot tubs, saunas, and treatments such as hot wraps. These can make you overheat, which can cause problems for you and your baby.

With this knowledge, I went for my first prenatal pampering at RN Spa.

Here are photos of RN spa located at Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre:

Reception area which is welcoming and cosy.

They have 19 treatment rooms in total.

Even the toilet interior looks so pretty and vintage!

Comfortable and detailed treatment rooms are always ready to welcome the guests of RN Spa

After 60 mins of treatment, I feel so refreshed as my therapist was very accomodating, her strokes made me feel like I was in heaven. My therapist made me feel very loose and relaxed and placed me in a blissful state of supreme awesomeness. I felt soooo grateful for her massage techniques and it helped it relieve all the tension I felt on my lower back. I truly felt like a new person when she was done. Plus, the treatment room was very elegant and relaxing. I was served hot ginger tea and a hot bowl of Bubor Terigu. The service was very very comforting for a pregnant lady.

On top of doing prenatal massages, RN Spa also has a wide range of spa services on their menu which helps man and non-pregnant ladies. Another speciality on their menu is their Qimu Body Harmoniser.

More info on the Qimu Body Harmoniser treatment :

Inspired by the ancient art of Jamu, which uses Indonesian medicinal herbs, Qimu (氣姆) Oil harnesses the efficacies of traditional Asian remedies to create an innovative product to fight the strains of a fast-paced urban lifestyle, especially in women.

The age-old Jamu massage, executed in fluid strokes on targeted pressure points, is a hand-work therapy that has gained reputation and popularity in modern Asian spas. Not only is it a balancing technique, using a combination of compression massage with skin-rolling, one’s senses are relaxed and body energized when rich essential oils are added to the session. In between the fingers of a trained therapist, Jamu oil can work wonders for a peaceful and effective massage, not to mention combat different ailments.

Elevate the sense of well-being with this traditional herbal remedy which combines the use of curative herbs and unique massage techniques, to detoxify and rejuvenate the body. Unlike other oils, Qimu oil promotes rapid vasodilatation which overall blood circulation improves, allowing capillaries to expand and carry away natural toxic waste products that are present in all cells. Its unique concoction of Chinese herbs, tumeric, ginger and tea tree bark also help to ease trapped wind in the body, while reducing fatigue, rheumatism and other body aches. Applied and massaged on the tummy and womb area, it is a boon for new mothers who have recently given birth; it can also help regulate menstrual flow and lessen cramps during periods.

For those with sensitive skin, opt for Green Tea Ginger Detox. Treatment includes 30 minutes massage, body wrap and steam.
