As you guys know that I have an amazing relationship with my long term dermatologist, each time I visit him, I would ask him questions on how to make my skin better. This time after my CO2 laser session -- I gained valuable insights into the root causes of acne.
Human skin is an amazing organ -- protective, waterproof, and exceedingly useful. It's also constantly changing and regenerating itself.
Acne is a skin condition that causes pimples or "zits." This includes whiteheads, blackheads, and red, inflammed patches of skin also known as cystic acne.
What is acne?
What causes acne?
Acne appears when a pore in our skin clogs. This clog begins with dead skin cells. Our body sheds dead skin cells that rises to the surface of the pore. When the body starts to produce lots of sebum -- oil that keeps our skin from drying out, the dead skin cells can stick together inside the pore. When the dead skin cells and sebum are stuck in the pore, acne is formed.
Some people get acne while they take such good care of their face and some can't be bothered about their face at all and their skin is SPOTLESS. *J.E.A.L.O.U.S*
Your chance of getting acne depends largely on your Family Genetic history. The tendency to develop acne runs in families.
For example, teenagers with acne often have other members in their family with acne as well. A family history of acne is associated with an earlier occurrence of acne and an increased number of retentional acne lesions.
Hormonal activity, such as menstrual cycles and puberty causes acne too. During puberty, an increase in male sex hormones called androgens cause the follicular glands to get larger and more sebum is produced, which in turn causes acne.
So does FOOD really have anything to do with ACNE???
The popular belief that chocolate intake is one of the root causes of acne is not supported by scientific studies at all.
Char Kway Tiao & other hawker centre yummies We are living in SINGAPORE and for goodness sake, with the amount of mouth watering food we have at our hawker centres - char kway tiao, fried carrot cake, black pepper prawns, chilli crab, egg yolk crab, laksa, satay, lala, sambal stingray, bbq chicken wings, fried hokkien mee, nasi lemak, met goring, rojak.... SOMEONE SCREAM "FOOD PARADISE" already....
According to scientific findings, such food is not the direct cause of acne. But in all honesty, I think one should keep a food journal / diary especially if your acne is quite bad. A food journal / diary also helps you keep your waistline in check!!!

Now as you keep a tight rein over your diet, you can slowly observe if there are any specific food that after eating causes your skin condition to change. After consistent recording, you would be able to point out the foods that trigger your outbreaks and even become more aware as to which food affects your digestion too!!!
Here are some simple steps you can take to help your acne:
- Remove all dirt or make-up.
- Keep your hands OFF your face.
- Scrub your face ONLY once a week.
- Clean your skin gently with a mild cleanser.
- Wash once or twice a day, including after exercising.
- Keep your hair clean and make sure it is not oily. Keep your hair out of your face.
