Two weeks ago, the hubby who still thought he was in his youthful physical prime incurred a sports injury. He was diagnosed with Tendon Injury (Tendinopathy) and we went to a TCM doctor instead of choosing the western doctors which would normally recommend ibuprofen aka pain killers.

After much online research, I realized that most tendon injuries were the result of gradual wear and tear  resulting from overuse or aging. A tendon injury may occur suddenly or gradually due to degeneration. The likelihood of a sudden injury increases if the tendon has already been weakened over time.

Symptoms my hubby faced:

  •  pain in the shoulder blades
  • stiffness
  • restricted range of movements
  • loss of strength in the shoulder
  • more pain during the night
  • a grinding sound and feeling was observed when rotating his arm

So we went to a TCM clinic and he underwent acupuncture treatment 3 times. We also went to ANTI-OXIDANT every week to help him recuperate faster. Suli --- the owner of ANTI-OXIDANT--- told us that after exercising, a session of light stretching at ANTI-OXIDANT would help reduce the build up of lactic acid in the muscles. To help the hubby recover, he did a few sets of stretching at ANTI-OXIDANT to help prevent stiffness.

I had previously posted about my first few treamtents at Anti-Oxidant here:

To recap, the ANTI-OXIDANT treatment entails entering a cabin comprising special tiles imported from Japan which releases positive ions when heated.  Staying in the room for a minimum of 30 minutes influences our bodies positively via the absorption of postive ions,  countering the effects of the residual negative ions in our bodies, thereby improving blood circulation, reducing fatigue, increasing our bodies' immunity system as well as providing anti-ageing benefits.

ANTI-OXIDANT  is a well tried and tested therapy in Japan, with the clientele in Singapore mostly made up of Japanese expatriates but the Singaporean customer base has seen an increase in recent months.

The hubby always enjoys his sessions at  ANTI-OXIDANT
and we would usually practice hatha yoga and core strengthening exercises there.
(I would bring my iPad inside and follow a youtube video. hahahahah =p)

After taking this photo, I asked the hubby:
"Why do you always do 'advertisey face' when we take photos?"

Hubby: "Of course! That's what I call a NATURAL! *Bling Bling* "

Me: "-__-|||||| lololololol"

'Advertisey face' - I coined this word to describe my husband's face when he does this....

On top of visits to ANTI-OXIDANT  and in between sessions of acupuncture therapy, we were also told by the TCM doctor to let the hubby consume more proteins and herbal soups to help him repair his muscles and tissues.

Here are some diet tips for those who are interested to recover quickly after injuring your tendon :
  • Protein and Amino Acids Protein, comprises of amino acids, aids growth and resynthesis of new tissues. Lean proteins such as egg whites / chicken breast / steamed fish are highly recommended.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids have been found to decrease inflammatory markers in the bloodstream.  Omega-3 Fatty Acids Omega-3 fatty acids also increases blood-flow and decreases symptoms of stiffness or swollen tissues.  Plus  Omega-3 helps improve your heart and brain health. Omega-3 is mostly found in fish and fish oils. You can either consume steamed codfish or baked salmon or even purchase a fish oil supplement from GNC / guardian.
  • Vitamin C is known to decrease tissue protein breakdown and helps recovery from soreness following exercise. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwis, bell peppers or you can choose a vitamin C capsule that can be found at any pharmacy.
  • Vitamin E plays the same role as vitamin C, reducing inflammation of injured tissue and decreasing protein breakdown in tendons, muscles and joints. High doses of vitamin E can be found in olive oil and nuts.
